Why is there a sudden demand for Retirement Homes | Eden Seniors
The current generation of senior citizens are much more evolved than their predecessors, more educated and financially stable. Young at heart and in spirit despite having aged physically, most of the elderly population today have remained independent and are very in touch with the modern ways of thinking. They are very aware of the ‘Perform or Perish’ scenario faced by their children which forces them to leave their old parents behind and move to different locations where job responsibilities and expectations increase day-by-day.
This has led to more and more retired elders opting for independent living in homes for seniors, which will enable them to lead dignified lives without being a burden on their children. It is becoming a common trend for senior citizens post a certain age to move to retirement homes to avoid being lonely for various reasons and enjoy a range of accessible facilities and comforts within a community–based way of living with like-minded people.
A retirement home is often referred to as an old age home or senior living facility and is usually a multi-residence housing facility intended for the retired people. In most cases, these homes typically provide an apartment-style set up or a suite of rooms along with additional facilities within the building like a common area for meals, get togethers, recreation activities, along with some form of health or hospital care on the premises. Retirement homes or senior living facilities are holistic living colonies comprising all the facilities needed by senior citizens right from elderly-friendly interiors to delivery of prompt medical attention in the case of a minor emergency.
The security in a senior living facility gives not just senior citizens but also their children and relatives peace of mind that they are protected from intruders and have round the clock care for them helping them lead a safe and secure life. However, the key factor that makes old age homes attractive to elders is the companionship as they are constantly in the company of people their own age. A place in a retirement home, like an apartment can be rented monthly, or can be bought to be owned.
Most senior living homes or facilities have wellness facilities that cater to a person’s physical, spiritual, emotional, social, and environmental wellness. In these homes or facilities, the dignity and independence of senior citizens that they have been used to all their lives is maintained with a good balance of companionship, engagement, and preventive healthcare. Most senior living homes are typically located out of the main city limits or closer to purer environments like the hills where pollution levels are extremely low, and the air is clean and fresh. In many retirement homes or senior living facilities, facilities on the premises could include regular health check-ups, preventive care programs, medical assistance, pharmacies, health clubs, gyms, swimming pools, jogging tracks, lush green, and healthy surroundings, etc.
The advantages of living in a retirement home cannot be discounted but it is important to note that living here can be expensive because the more the services, the higher the cost. In India, senior living facilities started growing a few decades ago and has picked up even more pace in recent times with many more in various stages of planning or construction. Retirement has always been perceived to be the stage of a person’s life when they slow down. However, for many senior citizens this is no longer true as many of them are healthy and active. This is where retirement homes allow them to enjoy life, live out old passions and remain independent long after they retire.
